Dansco Albums (7070) and protection

Hi all...

While I've mostly been interested in bullion, I used to collect old U.S. coins when I was a kid, and I think it would be fun and interesting to put together a "type set" like the coins that would fill a Dansco 7070 album. I should be able to fill in a good chunk of the holes with what I already have.

My current choice for coin protection/storage (even for bullion - hey, I like to keep them looking nice!) is air-tites with rings. They look great, protect the coin well, and still let you handle them.

My question is: how well do the Dansco albums protect coins? I know they come with some sort of "acetate slide" that seems like a coin flip, but it doesn't sound like it's air-tight, and the slides slip into the pages. Anyway, just wondering what some of you think in terms of how well this would protect coins long-term, or if you had any other suggestions. I like the air-tite albums, but they're not labeled and I don't think it would look very nice to make my own labels for a type set. Ideally, they would make a type set album that accepted air-tites!

Any thoughts? Thanks...

Dansco albums are fine for storing coins long term. I have never seen a coin ruined because it was stored in a Dansco album.

I have both. I use a Dansco for my Lincoln cents. There would be far toooo many air-tites to store and organize for each lincoln.

Depends on your situation. If you were having a handful for type coins, i.e. an example of each silver dollar coin, I might have a framer create a velvet lined frame to display the coins.

Airtites are good, but Danscos are better for going to coin shows.

NOTE OF CAUTION: I use cotton gloves when placing or removing any coin from my Dansco albums.

Thanks for the tip. I think I need to check out a Dansco in person to reassure myself that the coins are well-protected. (The funny thing is, I don't have anything worth that much - I just like to keep everything protected, whether it's bullion or some common date VG large cent worth $20!)

And I really like the air-tites because I feel the coins are fully protected, but I can still handle them and feel their weight and stack them, etc.

I think I will probably go with the Dansco 7070 if I ever do decide to start up a type set ...

Dansco will allow the coins to tone, best bet use the air tights or direct fit air tites .

Thanks for the info - that's kinda what I was afraid of. I've seen some pretty toning, but I'd like to keep the coins in the same condition they were in when they go into the album for storage.

Maybe I'll make my own air-tite type album and figure out some way to label it where it looks nice ... plus that way I won't have any blank spaces if I'm missing some expensive coin! :D

Sometimes, but that is usually dur to the toning process already begun on the coin, even if you cannot see it. I have never had a coin tone in my Danscos and this goes back 5 years of storage.

Besides, toned coins usually add heaps of value. I am purposely storing coins in various types of envelopes to encourage a natural toning.
